Cool or Hard

A while back, a client reached out about a project.

It seemed almost fractally technical and unabashedly decorative, considering the lift and prominence. It involved astral ephemera, the crepuscular sky, and good bit of color science. Quixotic.

Most of all it seemed hard as hell.

I accepted, dug in, and at some point, early in the process, I thought to myself “if this works, it’ll be the coolest thing I’ve ever done.”

And then I thought, “or is it just the hardest thing I’ve ever done?”

And then I thought, “wait, what’s the difference?”

And then I thought, “ohhhhhhhhh.”

The fact that I realized those things were intimately conflated for me didn’t much help to disentangle them. But it gave me another question to ask myself when evaluating why I want to do something.

“Do I want to do this because it’s a good idea, or just because it seems very, very hard?”

If you’re interested, it went great, was, in fact, cool, and I enjoyed almost every minute of it. You can see the case study here. Thanks for the call DB!
